NAHBS

If there was a five letter dirty word NAHBS would be it.

Make sure you have a tissue ready to clean your keyboard

Prolly has great collection of sets on flickr

This Vanilla would be my favorite bike of the show.  I have a soft spot for lugged frames with modern groups.  Sacha adds some really nice details like the polished crank and high flange hubs cross laced to carbon rims. A nice little twist on the classic look. The only thing that could make this bike better for me is some 32mm carbon rims instead of the 40mm+ profile.

It doesn’t get any cleaner then this Bishop.  Which took out best steel frame.

NAHBS flickr pool here.

The guys at Cog magazine have a great slide show too.

Assos Heritage

Assos have finally released some vintage Assos jersey designs. All they need to do now is sack that stupid model they use.

Note to Assos marketing: Please release more designs inspired by your heritage. It’s a no brainer.

Fire Fly

As an Indie Fab frame owner I had a keen interest into what would emerge post employee meltdown.

Im pretty psyched to see Tyler Evans, Jamie Medeiros and Kevin Wolfson teaming up to form Fire Fly. I’ll be eagerly waiting by my computer come the NAHBS to see what they cook up.

Press Release

Boston, MA—February 16, 2011—Firefly Bicycles is now crafting custom bicycle frames out of their 2000 square-foot shop in Boston, Massachusetts. The company’s founders, Tyler Evans and Jamie Medeiros, have designed, built and fit high-end Ti, steel, stainless steel and carbon frames for a combined 30-plus years at some of the world’s most revered names in handmade frames.

“We’re taking everything that was great about where we came from, where we’ve been, our history together, our deep roots in the international cycling community, our collective skills, and we’re using that as a starting point,” indicated Jamie Medeiros, Firefly Bicycles’ Director of R&D. “The fundamentals of making great bike frames haven’t changed dramatically, but there is so much room for improvement in attention to detail, dialing in ride quality, finish quality, customer service and making bikes that are truly unique to each rider.”

“From a really simple standpoint, we can and will make some of the world’s most impeccably designed and carefully built bikes, for both recreational and competitive use,” said Tyler Evans, Firefly’s Lead. “We’ve brought in Kevin Wolfson, an incredible frame designer and super cyclist. We’re taking nothing for granted. The high-end, handmade bike customer has seriously high expectations, as they should. The handmade industry’s craft and quality have never been better and there are a number of great builders out there. I’m confident we will raise the bar. We wouldn’t be doing this for any other reason.”

“Careful control of the bike purchasing and building experience is a foundation of our approach. We will be choosing only a handful of dealers around the globe; the best in the business. The majority of our customers, however, will be working with Firefly directly,” said Evans. “There’s no more intimate way for our customers to get a perfectly dialed-in, complete bike.”

Firefly has launched with two custom, TIG welded, hand-built bike options—the Firefly Road and Firefly Cross—in either Columbus XCr stainless steel or 3/2.5 titanium tubing, multiple frame options such as Di2 internal routing, horizontal dropouts, S&S couplers, internal 44mm headset, PressFit 30 bottom bracket, fender mounts, and nearly unlimited build kit options that range from high-end to “dream” builds. Learn more and keep up with the good news at fireflybicycles.com.

Internet Pricing Angers Australian Industry

Will it deter or stop Australian consumers from buying overseas?  I don’t think so.

Photo Friday

A couple of years ago I had the privilege to walk through the archive room at Magnum Photos New York.  I think it is every documentary photographers dream to be surrounded by so many photographs that have challenged the way mass media portrays the world.

Even Henri Cartier – Bresson, the master himself documented cycling.

Simply amazing

Simply amazing reportage photography by Chris Keulen. It is easy to see why his documentation of the African racing circuit won him a World Press first prize.

Photos like these inspire me to pick up the camera and shoot.

Teenie Weenie

The guys at Fair Wheel Bikes and Weight Weenies have put together a spreadsheet to calculate your next weight watchers build.

The spreadsheet accesses the weight weenie database to provide not only weights but specs about every component on a bike.  By selecting your desired components from dropdown lists you can build a virtual bike or custom wheelset and see what it’s finished weight would be along with notes about the specific components.

The sheet allows manual adjustments of component weights in case you need to change what’s in the database.   It then provides you with stock calculated weight as well as adjusted weight.  There is also an embedded custom wheel build section as well as group set weight listing so you can play with different combinations to make the group that is just right for you.

My name is Giovanni Pellizzoli

I have been posting lots of steel bike references lately. It’s not that I think steel is better or superior to carbon. Both are are great materials and offer different ride qualities.

Giovanni Pellizzoli the creator of Ciocc has dusted off the old torch and started making beautiful steel bikes again under the guise Pellizzoli. Simply stunning bikes.

Thanks Mark for the heads up.
