Monday moan

Maybe I’m just bitter and twisted I had to cancel my Tour Down Under trip and now have to listen and read about how much fun everyone had.

Like many other armchair cyclist that week my only relief from despair was to listen to the terrible ABC Adelaide radio coverage that resembled match calling from the Avoca under 13 D grade football, actually that might even be better.

Why can’t SBS just radio broadcast or even web stream the television audio for us poor souls that didn’t get a leave pass?

New kit on its way

A couple of years ago Eli Carrico designed some Los Angeles inspired kits. This year he designed a kit for VCR, Venice Chill Ride, a social ride every Tuesday night in Venice California. I’m most excited about getting the water bottles.

Shame on you Speedplay

How would you feel the next time you serviced your car the mechanic said he could not supply you with after market, ball joints, brake pads, belts or filters because the car manufacturer has issued a cease and desist. This is exactly what is happened to a small supplier of Speedplay rebuild kits.

I met Richard Bryne, creator of Speedplay, at the 2009 Interbike show. He imediately impressed me with his knowledge and design philosophy that I went out and purchased some of his pedals.

I find it very disappointing he would partake in any legal action to shut down small suppliers selling aftermarket parts for Speedplay Pedals. Especially when the parts can be purchased from your local bearing supply shop.

I for one am against manufactures taking advantage of consumers by charging inflated prices for commonly worn parts. We don’t live in the dark ages anymore and finding affordable alternatives are only a few clicks away on the google.

Read the forum thread here. It’s about half way down the page.

Speedplay aren’t the first company to deploy such behavior and I’m sure it won’t hurt sales or damage their reputation. But I’m still selling mine, anyone want a cheap pair of speed play zero’s?

Death by pothole

I have never seen a pothole do this much damage to a frame before.  However this is a great ad for the Edge 2.0 fork that is still in one piece.

My condolences Mike on your loss.

Boom Boom Bobridge

I managed to catch a glimpse of the Australia Road National Championships Sunday. By the time I arrived there was 4 laps to go, the peloton resembled the trail of shrapnel left behind by a bullet.  The weapon was Jack Bobridge, an impressive display of fitness and strength to break away then hold off the chase group for three laps.

I snapped a few pics, but it hardly captures the feeling of the day. Click the pics to view large.

Bobridge on the final corner of the final lap. Every morsel of energy was getting pushed towards those pedals

Twin Set

Some great bicycle builders have collaborated with automotive and motorbike manufacturers.

Colnago and Ferrari

Cicli Montante and Maserati

Bianchi and Ducati

Now there is Independent Fabrications and Toyota.

I saw this car while riding to work, this is total coincidence. I have never wanted a 1980 Toyota Corolla until now. Same colour all the way down to the gold spokes.
