When did it all go wrong?

Did someone say it was summer? Whoever is scheduling the weather here is Melbourne is doing a terrible job. Summer solstice is just around the corner and it feels more like the beginning of winter. The crappy weather has given me some time to catch up on reading, something I just don’t do enough of.

A little while ago I purchsed Go Faster, a book which looks at the history of racing car graphics. While reading the book, I realized cycling jersey design has suffered a similar evolutionary demise. Both sports began with simple numbers and colours to differentiate between riders and the countries they replresent. As sponsorship and the media coverage grew, so did the number of sponsor logos and under considered designs.

Today it seems pro cycling kit design is given to any clown that has downloaded a crack copy of the Adobe Creative Suite. There are less then a handfull of designs in the pro peloton that deserve a mention. My personal favorite is the AG2R kit, designed by Dutch designers Studio Dumbar. The use of the faded black bib receives some negative feedback, but in all its a solid and considered design.

Maybe I’m just being critical and will look back in 10 years to think how good the HTC Columbia kit of 2009 was. Then again…maybe not.

Behind the scenes

Rapha North America and the Continental Riders have set the tone and standard for many of the Rapha videos.  One of the photographers and directors responsible for these amazing images is Benji Wagner.  PDN online recently did a story on Benji’s process for the Rapha films.

Rapha Australia video #1

We just finished the first Rapha Australia video.  Really excited to show people what our landscape is like in the up coming videos.

Everything was shot on Canon 5D MKII with a 24-105L and a 28-70L.  One camera was using a MovieTube shoulder mount and the other was hand held.

We couldn’t shoot out the back of a ute or van like you can in America so we got creative and shot from a convertible. A 2010 Audi A5 to be exact. Not as good as a van but good enough ; )

We have been getting lots of emails about the music composed for this video.  If you like to know more about the man behind the sound visit Rob Law’s myspace page.

Watch it big here Great Ocean Road Classic from RAPHA on Vimeo.

Here are some stills from the shoots. Click the image to view bigger.

Dennis’s custom Paconi

Paconi sounds Italian, but it’s made here in Melbourne. Kevin Wingham is is the man behind the torch, putting together these sexy frames.

This custom beauty belongs to Dennis Bowen-Day. For those who frequent the North Road bunch rides, know the rear of this bike well. I say rear of the bike because there is a good chance you will be drafting Dennis’s wheel. His legs have earned him multiple Australian Masters Road and Track championships. He’s a great example for us young blood, that age should be no barrier for fitness and strength.

Aluminum often gets a bad rep as a frame material. People think it has a harsh ride or just not cool anymore. Truth is, aluminum is light, strong, stiff and inexpensive. These qualities all making it a great material, and perfect for crit racing bikes where your odds of crashing are greatly increased, and power transfer can earn you those vital seconds.

A custom frame allows Dennis to have a taller head tube, eliminating the need for spacers and increasing the front end stiffness. No spacers also makes the bike look more aggressive although the saddle to bar drop is quite conservative.

If you are considering a custom frame but are on a budget you should consider looking into something like Paconi.  You won’t be disappointed.
