Dan @ Shifter Bikes built me some new wheels. I wanted something light yet durable using an alloy clincher rim.
Carbon rims look great and ride well but breaking performance can sometimes suck, they are also expensive to replace if they are damaged.
The wheels are built using Kin Lin XR200’s 28 hole front and back. Radial lacing front and 2 cross rear. Hubs are C-4 FH80 front and RH210 rear, all held together with Ti spokes. I was a little apprehensive of Ti spokes but after riding them I can say for sure they feel great.
Wheels weigh in at 1220gr with rim tape, not bad for a $1300AU wheel set. Visit Shifter Bikes of you need to spec a set for yourself.
I’m a big fan of the matte black finish hubs. I also went for silver rims and gold spokes to try something different.
Pictures or it didn’t happen
I needed a little extra silver and black to carry through the wheel colours. So I got some Arundel Stainless cages, black bar tape and black saddle. It took a while getting used to looking at my bike without all black carbon wheels but I like the outcome now. 6.8kg as pictured.

Great editing and a perfect song. Its hard to believe that DJ Shadows “Endtroducing” album is nearly 14 years old. The album is a timeless Hip Hop masterpiece .
I usually think Trials Riding is lame . I appreciate the skill and athleticism but it does nothing for me visually. DANNY MACASKILL on the other hand changed my mind. His Trails riding with BMX influence makes it more dynamic and fluid.
Danny’s new video, really well shot although they did over use the dolly track.

The weekend weather was terrible in Melbourne but I was lucky enough to spend Thursday riding the Otway’s in full sunshine. The temperature was perfect but Wade and I still managed to whinge all day about the harsh sunlight ruining our photos. Mother nature just can’t win.
Everyone’s training for the Tour of Bright is in full swing except mine. 16km at 6% was very painful, safe to say I wasn’t taking pictures and soaking up the sights of this beautiful road.

I was in my local health shop on the weekend and noticed these Power Balance bracelets on the counter. I’m very much a skeptic when it comes to quick fixes, however an impressive list of testimonials from professional athletes had me intrigued.
In a nut shell, there is a hologram inside the bracelet that resonates at a frequency which promotes flexibility, strength and endurance.
I’m not sure about the science behind the hologram, but they have definitely done their homework on the marketing. The bracelet is on all the right people, and is getting it’s picture in all the right places. The packaging and website is sporty and slick, what you would imagine a new age Crystal shop would look like if it was owned by Under Armour.
Does it actually work, or is Power Balance just repackaged new aged crystals with a sporty look? I might give it a go this week and see what all the fuss is about. I wonder how many riders will be using one during the Tour of Bright this December. I heard this bracelet unlocks mystical climbing powers.
If you look closely at Mario Cipollini’s wrist in this photo, you will see he was an early tester of this technology. Proving there was no ill side effects of smoking while cycling while wearing the bracelet.
If you youtube search Power Balance there are a number of third party videos promoting its benefits and also an equal amount of videos myth busting it. Maybe just try one and make up your own mind.
